Silver City, NM; December 7, 2011 The Little Walnut Day-Use Picnic Area on the Silver City Ranger District, Gila National Forest, is scheduled to re-open on December 9, 2011. Gates will be open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the winter schedule. This re-opening is for all areas within Little Walnut including the two large group areas known as the "East" and "West" picnic sites and the individual (free) picnic sites on the north end of the campground.

During the temporary closure, the maintenance crew headed by Supervisory Engineering Equipment Operator Mike Diaz reconstructed the two low water crossings within the Little Walnut complex, and modified a unit of the free individual picnic area to accommodate recreationists with disabilities. These two improvements restored eroded crossings eliminating a safety hazard for vehicles within the picnic area plus providing increased accessibility for forest visitors.

While the day use area will re-open this Friday, construction in parts of the picnic area is still underway. Currently, crews are replacing the East and West group picnic site gates and adding hand railings to this Americans with Disabilities Act project. This construction will have no impact to use of the picnic grounds by the general public.

"The speed limit will continue to be 10 M.P.H. throughout the complex; the public is asked to please abide by the speed limit for their safety and the safety of others," says Ricky Sedillo, Recreation Specialist on the Silver City Ranger District.
