(Santa Fe) - Con Alma Health Foundation, the state's largest private foundation solely dedicated to health, announced today that its new, comprehensive report, Health Equity in New Mexico: A Roadmap for Grantmaking and Beyond, is available to the public.
The report contains data about the state's health measures and offers recommendations to make the quality of health and health care in New Mexico more equitable for people across different populations. The report updates information Con Alma reported on health disparities in 2006.
"We are using this report to guide our decisions related to grants and program initiatives, as well as to help us and communities across the state understand the complex health issues we face in New Mexico," said Dolores E. Roybal, Con Alma Health Foundation's executive director.
Con Alma developed the report with feedback from 15 focus groups, and data from government and nonprofits. People provided feedback about their health priorities in the following communities: Albuquerque, Clovis, Estancia, Grants, Hobbs, Las Cruces, Las Vegas, Raton, Roswell, Santa Fe, Silver City and Socorro.
Key findings/data include:
Hispanic and American Indian adults in New Mexico were more than twice as likely to be without health insurance coverage as whites.
By 2030, the state will rank fourth in the nation in percentage of people age 65 and older.
The number of households receiving food stamps has almost doubled during the recession, from 6 percent to 11 percent.
The state's rapidly changing environment, including demographic shifts, will have major implications in health for the people and communities of New Mexico.
Substance abuse and mental disorders affect more than half a million New Mexicans.
Recommendations include:
Support organizations that promote wellness strategies, such as prevention, nutrition, health promotion, spiritual health and well-being.
Support workforce development and fund programs that increase access to bilingual health, and cultural and linguistic competency, and ones that support using promotoras and traditional healers
Provide support and foster collaborations for organizations to educate legislators and policy makers on the work of nonprofits in New Mexico on strengthening health equity and on the impact of Medicaid and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to the state's underserved populations.
Expand grantmaking to rural communities and strengthen outreach to tribes, pueblos, Apache Nation and Navajo Nation.
