Silver City, NM – Western New Mexico University's annual commemoration of National Diversity Week will take place October 20 throughOctober 26.

All events, free and open to the public, are part of a national campaign of events through the month of October when Diversity Week is commemorated on college campuses.

This year's events include:

  • Saturday, October 20, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Graham Gym - Self Defense Workshop, facilitated by two black belt experts
  • Monday, October 22, 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Miller Library - Mirrors of Privilege Making Whiteness Visible (DVD), facilitated by WNMU Ombudsperson Dr. Kathie Gilbert
  • Tuesday, October 23, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Miller Library - The Nigerian Experience, presentation on Nigerian traditions and attire
  • Tuesday, October 23, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Student Memorial Center 3rd floor - Black Student Organization open forum
  • Wednesday, October 24, 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Miller Library - United Arab Emirates and Arabic Culture – A view into Arabic culture by Dr. Jeffrey Hill who taught in the United Arab Emirates
  • Thursday, October 25, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Miller Library - Banned Books in America: A discussion and preview of books banned through history.
  • Friday, October 26, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30p.m., Student Memorial Center 3rd floor - Gay/Lesbian/Transgender/Bisexual presentation followed by Q&A
  • Friday, October 26, 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Miller Library - Stereotypes and Statistics, a discussion led by WNMU Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Felipe Ortego
