SANTA FE - Governor Susana Martinez has ordered flags flown at half staff across New Mexico from sunrise on Monday, October 10 until sundown on Tuesday, October 11 in honor of United States Marine Corps Sergeant Christopher Diaz, 27, who was killed during a Special Operations combat mission in Afghanistan on September 27, 2011. Sgt. Diaz was raised in Albuquerque and graduated from La Cueva High School in 2003. He is survived by his parents Salvador and Sandra Diaz, brothers Raymond and Jeremy, six-year old daughter Mia Davis, five-year old son Jeremy Diaz, and his fiancée Tonya Jackson.

"Sgt. Diaz gave his life in defense of the freedoms and values that we all cherish," said Governor Martinez. "All New Mexicans mourn the loss of this brave young man and we will forever be grateful for the sacrifice he made on behalf of his country. As a symbol of appreciation and mourning, flags will fly at half staff across New Mexico in his honor. I ask New Mexicans to join me in keeping Sgt. Diaz, his family, his fiancée, and most importantly his children in our thoughts and prayers."

FLAGS FLOWN AT HALF STAFF IN HONOR AND MOURNING OF SERGEANT CHRISTOPHER DIAZ

WHEREAS, United States Marine Corps Sergeant Christopher Diaz, age 27, was tragically killed during a Special Operations combat mission in Afghanistan on September 27, 2011;

WHEREAS, Sgt. Diaz was raised in Albuquerque, where he was a 2003 graduate of La Cueva High School and was an honored member of the school's ROTC program;

WHEREAS, Sgt. Diaz served with Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, based at Twentynine Palms, California;

WHEREAS, Sgt. Christopher Diaz is survived by his parents Salvador and Sandra Diaz, brothers Raymond and Jeremy, six-year old daughter Mia Davis, five-year old son Jeremy Diaz, and his fiancée Tonya Jackson;

WHEREAS, Sgt. Diaz's patriotism, bravery and dedication to our nation will always be remembered;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Susana Martinez, Governor of the State of New Mexico, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the Laws of the State of New Mexico, do hereby order that all flags be flown at half-staff from Monday, October 10, 2011, until sundown on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, in honor and mourning of United States Marine Sergeant Corps Christopher Diaz. The thoughts and prayers of the people of New Mexico go out to his family as well as a heartfelt thank you for his courageous service.
