Silver City, New Mexico, November 27, 2012: The "Your Home, Your Voice" community survey started back in January with focus groups throughout the county and continued with a resident survey during the summer in which 5,055 residents participated. Finally, on Monday, Dec. 3, the preliminary results will be presented at the Grant County Community Health Council meeting at 3 pm in the Grant County Commissioners' Board Room, 1400 Hwy 180 East. The community is encouraged to attend.

The comprehensive community survey asked residents to gauge their top priorities on health and wellness issues in Grant County. The priority rankings included environmental health, economic health, health services, and community social health for adults and teens. Thirteen focus groups held in January reviewed proposed issues and suggested additional concerns specific to Grant County to be included in the survey.

Health Council coordinator, Tiffany Knauf says of the survey results: "The survey results are interesting, as we can break them down by regions within Grant County. We can see the overall priorities tend to stay the same, but the rankings are different to each community. This means requests for funding can be tailored to meet the individual community's need."

For example, Grant County residents over all reported that the top three priorities for "community and social health for children and teens" were: activities for children and teens, substance abuse, and child abuse and neglect. In Silver City, however, residents chose the top three priorities in that category to be: activities for children and teens, substance abuse, and gang violence. In Bayard and Santa Clara, the priority rankings were: activities for children and teens, child abuse and neglect, and substance abuse. In Hurley, the top three priorities were slightly different: activities for children and teens, gang violence, and substance abuse.

More community assessment results will be presented on Monday at the Health Council's meeting.

The Health Council conducts an assessment with a survey every five years to establish priorities for the council's efforts as the County's Health and Wellness Planning Authority. It is then able to create data that permits the community to apply more successfully for grants and funding that align with residents' concerns. The previous survey results in 2007 were used to leverage over $15 million for Grant County programs and services by community partners. The Health Council leveraged $1.2 million for programs such as the Una Mano Amiga Patient Navigator program, cancer support groups, a community safety fair, and the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities program.

The full survey results will be available to the public in January 2013 as part of the Health Council's Community Profile at its website www.gcchc.org . The Health Council will present specific community survey results beginning in February 2013.
