Silver City, NM; October 17, 2012-In cooperation with the Gila National Forest, join the Grant County Archaeological Society for a celebration of National Archaeology Day scheduled for this coming Saturday, October 20, 2012, by hiking to a prehistoric petroglyph site.
The prehistoric site is the Dragonfly Site named for the many dragonfly petroglyph images found there. It is located on the Twin Sisters Creek on the Fort Bayard Game Refuge and a mile north of U.S. Highway 180 off Arenas Valley Road. Look for signs along U.S.180.
Marilyn Markel, a member with the Grant County Archaeological Society, will lead the hike to the Dragonfly, stopping briefly at one of the Civilian Conservation Corps historic check dams and a small Mimbres Pueblo Ruin.
Interested individuals are asked to meet at the Dragonfly trailhead October 20th at 9:00 a.m. The hike is moderate, about 4 miles round trip, starting at and returning to the trailhead. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, plus a sun hat and water, are recommended. Further information may be obtained by contacting Markel at (575) 536-9337.
