Program: Learn about Local Community Science Birding Projects

Friday, Nov 3, 2023 | 6:00-7:30 (ish!) pm
Rm 111, Harlan Hall, WNMU

Join us for a program on our outstanding local community science projects.Organizers John Gorey and Linda Moore will cover details and how to get involved with local Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) as well as the Winter Raptor Survey. Data collected through these projects provide researchers, biologists, and wildlife agencies with valuable information to gauge the health of bird populations and thus inform action. Plus, these are great ways to get outside with fellow bird enthusiasts. Come and find out if these research projects are up your alley!

Harlan Hall is located on 12th Street, between Alabama and Louisiana Streets in Silver City. Access WNMU Campus map here.

Note: This presentation will be available live via Zoom with a recording available afterward on our YouTube channel.

11:30 am lunch | noon meeting

La Fonda Restaurant, 601 E Pine St, Deming

Show up for an important conservation issue affecting our region!

Friends of the Floridas will give an update on the status of their court fight against the American Magnesium mine proposal, and the revised exploration plan that the company is now proposing. This update will include a discussion of strategies available for long term protection for the natural character of the Floridas.

This meeting will also include guest speaker, Patrick Nolan, Director of Friends of Organ Pipe - Desert Peaks National Monument, Las Cruces. Mr. Nolan will discuss the history of the Monument, how it came to be, and the protections created by National Monument Status.

As an incentive to attend, the Friends of the Floridas will have a drawing for $10.00 to help defray your lunch cost, a drawing for free Friends of the Floridashats, and free Friends bumper stickers while they last!

Having a SWNMA presence at the meeting would be helpful, both to support their work and to bring our organization up-to-date. PleaseThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.if you plan to attend!

Birding Field Trip to Lake Roberts
Saturday, Nov 18, 2023
8:30 - 11:30 am

Trip leader: Brian Dolton. The outing will start at the Lake Roberts Boat Launch area (see map) at 8:30 am. We'll bird from around the parking area and fishing promontory, and also across the inlet creek to the picnic area side. We'll also bird from the Upper End campground along to the south side of the lake, and potentially the dam area.

We will be expecting a range of duck species, possibly with other water birds such as cormorants and grebes. The water fringes should hold a range of sparrows, and with luck we may see a late osprey or an early eagle.

Ride-sharing from Silver City? Meet at 7am at WNMU Fine Arts Center south parking lot (see campus map) to convoy to Lake Roberts at 7:15am. Expect to be back in Silver City around 1pm.

Site accessibility: Wheelchair-accesssible parking and restrooms are available at both the Boat Launch area and Upper End Campground. Parking area surfaces are mostly flat, loose gravel. Trails at the Boat Launch and Upper End Campground are narrow, sometimes overgrown and muddy, mostly flat though slope increases deeper into trail. The Dam Area is quite steep.
