The Mimbres Region Arts Council, with premier sponsor Cissy McAndrew/United County Mimbres
Realty, will kick off another great season of Folk music with Boris McCutcheon & the Salt Licks on
Oct. 21 at the Buckhorn Opera House in the scenic mountain town of Pinos Altos - 10 minutes
outside Silver City.
Raw. Sincere. Diverse. New Mexicana, Boris McCutcheon was born on Massachusetts farmland, but
has found his place in the mountains of New Mexico. His writing and music are reflections of the
characters he has encountered and the landscapes he has surrounded himself with. Currently, the
foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains provide inspiration but his songs are peppered with
experiences on the shores of Cape Cod, Northern California, and Southwest deserts.
"One of his greatest skills is his ability to use that connection (with nature) as inspiration, but
without sounding earthy. His songs are genuine, never contrived, and damn good every one of
them… all his songs have rich instrumental arrangements and McCutcheon's throaty voice, which
somehow manages to be gruff and soothing at the same time. His music is frequently described as
rootsy, but his sound is unique and original. McCutcheon writes rich, wonderful songs, is a skilled
musician and has a voice like no one else. "Ross Burns, Five Magazine
McCutcheon names a seemingly incongruous group of people as influences, ranging from Jimi
Hendrix to Walt Whitman, McCutcheon emphasizes the importance of lyrical content in his music,
as opposed to a sole focus on the guitar and other instrumentation. "Sure it's different, but it's really
important to have some decent lyrical material under the music, holding the music together. Those
are the people that definitely influenced my writing."
"I am very excited about this show," stated MRAC Director Faye McCalmont. "Boris has a
wonderful voice, a great repertoire and a terrific band. It will be a very enjoyable musical
evening."
The Folk Series season will bring Ari Hest, Gregory Alan Isakov, Antje Duvekot, and the Milk
Carton Kids to the Opera House. Discounted season passes are available to MRAC members.
Additional sponsors include the Buckhorn Opera House, Holiday Inn Express, and Silver City
Radio.
