Silver City, NM - A new course to cover the history of Chicano music from before the 1930s to the present will be previewed on Thursday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Global Resource Center auditorium.
The course, History of Chicano Music, will be offered in the spring semester by professor Patricia Cano who created the new offering.
The fall preview will include a screening of Chicano Rock, a 90-minute documentary covering the history of the music genre by Mexican American groups and artists.
The course will cover early Chicano music, Chicano rock in California, the origins of Tex-Mex music and the influence of the German polka, local Chicano musicians, Chicano Rap, the diversity in New Mexican music, the corrido, Chicano gospel music, Chicano country western music, and many other genres and time periods.
Students in any major program and non-degree seeking students are welcome to enroll in the three-credit course that will be offered Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:50 p.m. beginning in January. Created as a multimedia course, students will experience listening to the musical genre through YouTube videos, CDs and film. Special guest musicians will also visit the course throughout the semester.
Free to the public, the course preview will also include Chicano music trivia games and prizes.
