Washington, DC (October 12, 2011) Today, Congressman Steve Pearce issued the following statement in regard to the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, spanning from September 15th to October 15th:

"New Mexico is a heritage and culture-rich state," said Pearce. "We are fortunate enough to live in an area that has been enriched with the influences of Hispanic culture. This is a culture that places highest importance on faith, family, and values it is a culture of integrity, respect, and honor."

"In mid-September, I attended the Salsa Festival in Las Cruces," continued Pearce. "This event kicked off New Mexico's Centennial celebration. The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, in conjunction with the celebration of our state's centennial, is special. It reminds us to recognize the contributions of the Hispanic culture to our homes, communities, our state, and our nation. While it is a time to celebrate the unique contributions of one culture, it is also a time to recognize that all of our cultures intermingle to form the American culture and the New Mexican culture."
