Washington, DC (October 6, 2011) Today Congressman Steve Pearce applauded the unanimous passage of H.R. 1461, the Mescalero Apache Tribal Leasing Authorization Act. Rep. Pearce introduced the bill that will promote economic growth and honor the right for Native American communities to exercise self-determination.
"The unanimous support for this legislation exemplifies the positive effect that it will have for the tribes of New Mexico," said Pearce. "This legislation is important to both the people of the Mescalero Apache Tribe as well as surrounding communities. The revenue gained from leasing this water will go to shore up vital services on the reservation, including elder care, scholarship programs and infrastructure improvements."
Mescalero President Mark Chino commended Rep. Pearce for his work on this legislation. "On behalf of the Mescalero Apache people," said Chino. "I want to express our appreciation to Representative Pearce for sponsoring legislation authorizing the Tribe to lease its water rights. This will provide the Tribe with a valuable economic opportunity and the ability to provide water to people in the area."
Fellow New Mexicans, Congressman Lujan and Congressman Heinrich, were cosponsors of this legislation. Additionally, the bill is identical to legislation introduced by Senator Jeff Bingaman in the Senate.
