Silver City, NM – Donald Gutierrez, professor emeritus of English, has recently published a book entitled Feeling the Unthinkable: Essays on Social Justice.
The book is a structured collection of 48 essays and book reviews that Gutierrez has written since his retirement from Western New Mexico University in 1994. The pieces range from critiques of the federal government's recent foreign policy actions to discussions of spending by the Pentagon.
The 48 essays are presented in four sections covering state terrorism, war on democracy, racism and genocide, and iconoclasm.
Gutierrez has long been an outspoken critic of state terrorism in the United States and abroad. He was a member of the University of Notre Dame faculty from 1968 to 1975 before joining the English Department of WNMU where he taught for 19 years. In 1989, Gutierrez received the New Mexico Eminent Scholar Award.
Gutierrez has published six books of literary criticism. Since his retirement, he has published over 50 essays and reviews. He currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The book is dedicated to his late wife Marlene.
