Ever wonder what happens to the old tires left behind at the tire shop when you buy new ones? New Mexico law requires scrap tires to be disposed or recycled only at authorized facilities. It's the responsibility of the tire dealer to make sure that happens – which by the way – is why many businesses charge an ‘environmental' or ‘disposal' fee when you buy new tires.

The State does not mandate a fee. You can help keep New Mexico clean, safe and beautiful by reporting illegal dumping to your local code enforcement official or by filing a complaint using the New Mexico Environment Department's website at www.nmenv.state.nm.us. Simply click on ‘websites and tools' and then click on ‘environmental notifications.'
