The Silver City Museum Brown Bag lunch program will pay tribute to our region's rich baseball heritage on Monday, October 10, from noon till 1 pm, at the museum's Broadway Street Annex, with a FREE staging of "Silver City/Grant County Baseball in New Mexico's Centennial Era," a presentation with photos.
With the month of October featuring Major League Baseball's playoffs and the World Series, and in keeping with the spirit of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," researcher Jim Kelly will treat the audience to "peanuts and Cracker Jacks," while he talks about the origins of America's Pastime in the Silver City Area, from the region's first teams to the formation of the Silver City Baseball Association and the Copper League.
But the event isn't just about a lecture with pictures and snack food. Attendees are invited to wear the caps from their favorite teams, and bring their gloves.
You don't need to be a big baseball fan to enjoy this light-hearted presentation however. The sport is but a small part of local Centennial era history and Kelly will touch on a few of the other historical elements of the years surrounding the 1912.
The presentation is part of the Museum's ongoing series of free Centennial-themed Brown Bag lunch presentations, which will focus on New Mexico Statehood themes through December 2012. The Museum Annex is located at the northwest corner of Broadway and Arizona, in the former PNM building. The Silver City Museum creates opportunities for residents and visitors to explore, understand and celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of southwestern New Mexico by collecting, preserving, researching and interpreting the region's unique history.
