Silver City, NM - The High Desert Sportsmen's Club recently donated $800 to the Western New Mexico University Police Academy for the purchase of holsters.

The WNMU Police Academy, the only university police academy program in New Mexico, plans to purchase new holsters for use in its firearms program, a section of the 24-week academy.

"We support our local law enforcement, especially the academy," said Bill Van Dran, High Desert Sportsmen's Club member.

The Grant County-based club sponsors local gun shows, 4-H activities, and hosts shoots at the shooting range. Members are certified instructors.

The WNMU Police Academy graduated 19 students in spring 2011. Applications for the 2012 class are being accepted through October 28. For information on acceptance to the program, contact Steve Chavez at 575-538-6288. Application requirements are available at www.wnmu.edu.
