PHOENIX - - Monday, Oct. 17 is the due date for individual taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2010 income tax returns. It is also the last day 2010 tax returns can be submitted electronically.
The IRS expects to receive approximately 10.7 million tax returns from taxpayers who used Form 4868 to request a six-month extension to file. Some taxpayers can wait until after Oct. 17 to file, including those serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or other combat zone localities and people affected by recent natural disasters. Locally, an estimated 73,500 New Mexicans requested the extension to file for this year.
At midnight, Oct.17, electronic filing ends for the 2010 individual income tax returns. After this time, taxpayers can only submit a paper tax return for 2010. Here in New Mexico, a projected 690,400 will file electronically out of an expected 913,400 tax returns for 2010. Electronically filed tax returns are almost error free due to software programming and these returns save the government money due to lower processing costs. Taxpayers with refunds should consider direct deposit. This eliminates a refund check from being lost or stolen in the mail.
New Mexico taxpayers still have time to file on time and can do so for free, online, by using IRS Free File. Free File is a fast, easy and free way to prepare and electronically file federal taxes online. IRS Free File can be reached by going to IRS.gov and clicking on the Free File icon and is available for use by all New Mexico taxpayers.
