On Saturday, October 1, the WNMU Tennis team hosted a mixed doubles tournament, the first of a series of community tennis tournaments, followed by a delicious barbeque. The team is offering lessons and this series of tournaments to raise money for travel and training expenses. The lessons are offered for all ages and all levels on Saturdays from 9-10 am through December. More lessons will be available once their training schedule is confirmed.
The WNMU Tennis teams welcomed a new coach to their team last week. Antonio Burgos, came from Burgos Tennis in the Bay Area of California where he had been coaching for over twenty years. He has a Masters in Education and was an educational consultant, and he is focused on equity for diverse communities. His academy was very successful with 100 percent success rate for students, and while students were required to have at least a 3.0 GPA, most students carried a 4.0 GPA. His motto was "Champions on and off the court." Before the school, he coached professional tennis for the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and trained a top 30 woman player and a top 100 woman player. He also worked with high performance juniors. Burgos stated that he was drawn to coach the WNMU Tennis Team because of their extraordinary talent and determination. He is also impressed by their dedication to community service through the tennis clinics and community tournaments. He plans coach in Silver City long-term because he is intrigued by the community's dedication to embracing diversity and involvement in the arts.
Lessons cost $5.00 per person. They request that you bring a racket, water, and sunscreen.
