New Mexico pet owners encouraged to check "best if used by" dates

Northwest Naturals has issued a voluntarily recall of certain two-pound packages of Feline Turkey Recipe Raw Frozen pet food after the product tested positive for the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus. State officials encourage pet owners who may have purchased the product to check "best if used by" dates listed on the packaging.

The recalled product carries "best if used by" dates of May 21, 2026 (also look for "B10") and June 23, 2026 (also look for "B1"). The product was distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Washington in the United States, and British Columbia in Canada. The product may have also been distributed in New Mexico, as several retail locations throughout the state carry Northwest Naturals products.

Testing conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) and the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ODVL) at Oregon State University confirmed that a domestic cat in Washington County, Oregon died after consuming the raw frozen pet food. Testing confirmed the presence of HPAI in both the pet food and the cat.

To date, there have been no reports of HPAI in domestic cats in New Mexico.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled product should immediately discontinue feeding the product. If your pet shows any signs of illness, contact your veterinarian.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, clinical signs of HPAI infection in domestic cats may include the following symptoms:
· fever
· lethargy
· low appetite
· reddened or inflamed eyes
· discharge from the eyes and nose
· difficulty breathing

neurological symptoms such as tremors, seizures, incoordination or blindness
