A group of local high school students are gearing up this summer to participate in New Mexico State University's College of Business inaugural Accounting Career Awareness and Accelerated Career Awareness summer programs.
The College of Business is partnering with NABA Inc., a nonprofit membership organization that is dedicated to advancing business leaders in accounting, finance, business and entrepreneurship. This year, 30 local high school students will be attending ACAP's summer camp with week-long activities from June 16-20.
"The ACAP program helps high students connect with accounting and finance education and career options that they may not have previously considered," said Bryan Ashenbaum, dean of the College of Business. "It helps them better understand the varied careers they can have. The idea for this program was suggested by Ms. Nora O'Garro, an NMSU alumna who coordinates these programs nation-wide for NABA."
The collaboration aims to empower high school students with year-round opportunities and immersive experiences to explore career pathways in these fields and other business-related fields as well. ACAP also equips students with mentorship, ongoing programming and the tools to excel in their academic and professional journeys.
"The collaboration with NABA was wonderful; they bring expertise and passion to the program that is very inspiring," Ashenbaum said. "It will provide these students insights and motivation to start their college pathway strong. In addition to information regarding the specific majors, the program also provides insights on goal setting, personal branding and how to successfully transition from high school to college."
There will also be keynote speaker Rob Evans, a former NMSU basketball player and coach. Evans was inducted into the New Mexico and NMSU Hall of Fame.
