WASHINGTON - Rep. Yvette Herrell has sent a letter to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham urging her to promote school choice, parental rights, and a stronger educational system for New Mexico's families.
"I write today on behalf of the children and parents of New Mexico and their right to choose their own education in our state," wrote Rep. Herrell. "It has become clear that New Mexico's current approach to education is not working. Unfortunately, our state ranks dead last for Pre-K-12 education in the nation. Our children deserve better."
"Parents need greater choice in where to send their children. Within the public school system, there need to be greater opportunities for children to attend charter schools, which have proven to be effective in producing positive results for children, particularly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and in areas where traditional public schools are not achieving proficient student outcomes. Nearly 206,000 teachers serve approximately 3.4 million students at 7700 charter schools nationwide. Charter schools also have broad bipartisan support, with a Senate Resolution supporting charter schools passing unanimously in May of 2021."
"It is troubling that the Biden Administration's continued attack on charter schools and most recent proposed rules would make it more difficult for charter schools to receive funding in the future and will have devastating negative impacts on education opportunities for our children. I was pleased to see that eighteen Governors from across the country wrote to the Department of Education in opposition to these changes and emphasized that parents need greater autonomy in choices for their children, not fewer choices dictated by the federal government."
