Gary A. Shephard, 75, a resident of Silver City, NM left this life early Friday morning, October 12, 2012 in his home with the love of his life at his side. Gary was strong, courageous and brave as he fought his illness to the very end.
Gary was born in Binghamton, New York, September 6, 1937 to Arnold Shephard and Wilhelmena Knauf. He was the oldest of four children and became the man of the house at age twelve when his beloved father died suddenly. Gary served in both the Army and the Naval Reserves. After his military career he began working for the State Hospital of New York with the developmentally disabled and found his true calling serving this populace in our community for over 45 years. Gary loved all people and had a rare passion for life that blessed people privileged enough to know him. Gary had an infectious laugh and smile that lit up a room and could brighten anyone's day. Gary loved all types of music but was a Jazz enthusiast. He was a brilliant artist and an accomplished actor. He was a man who loved with all of his heart and inspired all of us blessed to receive his love to become better people. Gary was kind, compassionate and had a wonderful sense of humor. We the ones to love and know him will be forever touched by the time he spent in our lives. His sudden absence in our lives will be acutely felt for lifetimes; he will be missed more than words can say. Gary's true joy was his home and his family.
He is survived by his mother, Wilhemina O. Daugherty of Binghamton, NY; the love of his life, Susan Cook of the family home; five sons whom he loved and was proud of, Noah and Lucien Shephard both of Silver City; Stephen Shephard of Binghamton, NY; Scott Shephard and wife Jodie of Binghamton, NY; Michael Shephard and companion Andrea of Binghamton, NY; three grandchildren, Stephanie, Cassidy and Eli Shephard; one brother, Zeb Ostrom and companion Jay of Binghamton, NY; one sister, Bonnie "Bon Bon" McAndrew of Binghamton, NY; former wife and life friend, Paulette Shephard of Grants Pass, OR; former wife, Margaret Shephard; numerous nieces, nephews and great friends. He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers, Gil and Jan Shephard.
A Celebration of Life memorial with full military honors will be held Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 11am at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with Ward Rudick officiating.
