John I. King, 97, was born March 23, 1928, in Winterville, NC and passed away on July 30, 2025 in Deming, NM. One of nine children born to Daniel King and Birdie Stocks King. John lived a life of dedication and service.
He proudly served in the Merchant Marines in 1941, the United States Army from 1942 to 1945, and the United States Navy from 1945 to 1965 totaling 25 and a half years, 21 and a half of those years in the Navy. During his Navy years, he traveled the world, demonstrating commitment and courage.
After retirement, John continued to serve his community by working at Pope & Talbot Lumber Mill while serving in the Police Reserve and Paramedic for the ambulance service in Bremerton, WA.
John was married to his first wife Barbara King for 61 years, following her passing, he married Dixie L. King with whom he shared 11 years together.
He is survived by his 5 children, Deborah Lamoureux and husband Rick of Port Orchard, WA, Sandra Waugh and husband Jim of Deming, NM, Rebecca Dwake and husband Dennis of Deming, NM, Scott King and wife Diana of Bremerton, WA and John King of Deming, NM. He also leaves behind a stepdaughter, Melody Parra and husband Miguel of Las Cruces, NM.
His legacy includes 23 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
John enjoyed fishing, camping, and watching NFL and College football. He shared his love of sports by coaching Little League Baseball for his sons. Known for his joyful spirit, he loved to dance square-dancing, ballroom, and more-he played the harmonica with passion.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and the most distinctive laugh. John loved talking about his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was very much into his family and loved travel, especially with Dixie.
He is also survived by two younger sisters, Sylvia Higgins and husband Sam and Frances Dixon, both of Greenville, NC.
The Funeral Services for John will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, with visitation starting at 10am followed by the service at 11am at Baca's Funeral Chapel. The Internment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery, accompanied by the United States Navy. A luncheon will follow at the First Assembly of God Church in Deming, NM. Pastor David Duffy will officiate.
