Topic: Tour of the Gila

Jack Brennan was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in economics from Georgetown University in 1973, followed by a master's degree in environmental affairs from Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs in 1977. His connection to Silver City began during the summers of 1976 and 1977, when he worked on two adobe houses in the area.

A free concert with Sean Gaskell will take place at the Silver City Public Library, 515 W. College Ave. in Silver City. The concert is free and open to the public thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Library.

Sean Gaskell plays the kora, a 21 stringed West African harp. He studied under the extensive instruction of  Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Gambia,  and both Youssoupha Cissokho and Mamadou Cissokho in Senegal.  The kora is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots.

Southwestern  Country & Blues Singer, Gary Blackchild is based in the high desert of Taos New Mexico . Originally from Pasadena CA ,his Afro-Indigenous roots have had a big influence on his Southern Roots style of playing .  From  Blues to Bluegrass, Country and Gospel, to Southwest Americana, Outlaw Ballads, and Desert Rock. His lyrics reflect his nomadic journey and account of his adventures as a Black and Indigenous man living in the southwestern landscape.

The NMSU Cooperative Extension Service in Grant County will be hosting a Calving Management Workshop at the Extension Office to support local livestock producers during one of the most critical times of the year.

Calving season has a direct impact on the economic stability of ranching operations in our county. This workshop is designed to provide research-based, practical guidance to help producers reduce calf loss, improve herd health outcomes, and strengthen overall operation sustainability.

The newly formed Southwest Horseman's Horse Show Association kicked off its inaugural show in Silver City at Southwest Horseman's Park, drawing 30 exhibitors ranging in age from 3 to 83. Exhibitors hailed from eastern Arizona, Silver City, Escondido, Las Cruces and La Luz, New Mexico, coming together for a full day of competition and camaraderie.

Retired professor Dave McDonald will present on his years of research on Neotropical manakins, colorful birds with a lek mating system in which males perform spectacular courtship displays at clustered courts visited by females prospecting for mates. Most recently his focus has been on Golden-winged Manakins in Ecuador where he discovered that females play a more active role in shaping male behavior than previously suspected.

The Big Sit is a light-hearted birding competition started by the New Haven Bird Club that is now an international event.

The goal of the competition is to identify as many birds as we can within a 17-foot diameter circle, and the Iron Bridge across the Gila River is an excellent vantage point to view species up and down the river. This event is low-mobility accessible, and binoculars are available to borrow.

ALASH, Named Distinguished Artist of Tuva, are masters of Tuvan Throat Singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this group from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music.
