SNAP Benefits
Part Three
Corn is one of the food products that individuals can purchase with SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

During recent years, usage levels of the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) under its current name (since October of 2008) as well as under its previous name of "Food Stamps" have been highest in Luna County. In the late 1900s and around the turn of the century, though, usage levels were highest in Grant County.
All statistics listed in this news column are from the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).According to statistics in a report of activities in January of 1989 – the earliest monthly reports listed from the FNS of the USDA – 3,379 people in 1,120 households received benefits through the SNAP in Grant County. Of those individuals, 688 people in 224 households were receiving public assistance and 2,691 people in 896 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $188,744.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
In January of 2000, the stats for Grant County detailed that 3,688 people in 1,421 households received benefits through the SNAP. Of those individuals, 878 people in 298 households were receiving public assistance and 2,810 people in 1,123 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $274,000.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
In January of 2010, statistics for Grant County showed that 5,753 people in 2,441 households received benefits through the SNAP. Of those individuals, 481 people in 182 households were receiving public assistance and 5,272 people in 2,259 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $709,833.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
In January of 2020, a report issued on November 11, 2022, indicated that 7,485 people in 3,972 households received benefits through the SNAP in Grant County. Of those individuals, 632 people in 236 households were receiving public assistance and 6,853 people in 3,737 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $899,001.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
In July of 2021, a report issued on September 6, 2022, detailed that 8,772 people in 4,713 households in Grant County received benefits through the SNAP. Of those individuals, 705 people in 250 households were receiving public assistance and 8,067 people in 4,463 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $2,058,751.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
In July of 2022, a report issued on June 17, 2023, indicated that 7,996 people in 4,354 households received benefits through the SNAP in Grant County. Of those individuals, 616 people in 214 households were receiving public assistance and 7,380 people in 4,140 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $2,054,946.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
For Luna County, in January of 1989, 3,176 people in 1,010 households received benefits through the SNAP. Of those individuals, 474 people in 145 households were receiving public assistance and 2,702 people in 865 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $170,406.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
In January of 2000, the stats for Luna County detailed that 3,181 people in 1,135 households received benefits through the SNAP. Of those individuals, 361 people in 110 households were receiving public assistance and 2,820 people in 1,025 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $216,626.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
In January of 2010, statistics for Luna County showed that 6,668 people in 2,615 households received benefits through the SNAP. Of those individuals, 599 people in 191 households were receiving public assistance and 6,069 people in 2,424 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $799,234.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
In January of 2020, a report issued on November 11, 2022, indicated that 9,186 people in 4,347 households received benefits through the SNAP in Luna County. Of those individuals, 757 people in 260 households were receiving public assistance and 8,429 people in 4,087 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $1,061,416.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
In July of 2021, a report issued on September 6, 2022, indicated that 11,186 people in 5,360 households received benefits through the SNAP in Luna County. Of those individuals, 788 people in 267 households were receiving public assistance and 10,398 people in 5,093 households were not receiving public assistance. The total amount of money listed by the FNS of the USDA in this report – $254,726.00 – as being spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP may or may not be the correct amount. Please note that the amount listed as being spent does not correlate to any other amounts for this county or the other three counties for the number of people helped through the SNAP.
In July of 2022, a report issued on June 17, 2023, showed that 10,649 people in 5,040 households in Luna County received benefits through the SNAP. Of those individuals, 789 people in 254 households were receiving public assistance and 9,860 people in 4,786 households were not receiving public assistance. A total of $2,634,639.00 was spent by the government for these benefits provided through the SNAP.
