Zero-Based News
Part Four
zero based news part four

This news series continues by detailing additional types of journalists, with each type having a different function.

An investigative reporter prepares news content based on research and the use of investigative techniques. In many cases, journalists who are investigative reporters focus on negative news content – malfeasance, fraud, misappropriation, theft, corruption, and other illegal activities. Positive news content – ways to save money, methods to pay for college education, how to purchase or rent a home, and other aspects of life – could likewise be considered subjects for an investigative reporter.

While investigative techniques could be utilized for those types of positive news content, most investigative reporters do not consider news content of that nature to be investigative journalism.

An opinion writer prepares news content that is subjective in tone. The news content represents the viewpoint of the specific opinion writer.

A photojournalist presents news content through the lens of a camera. The news content may be in the form of a photograph, video, or film. A photojournalist may visualize news content written by someone else or may create visual news content that stands on its own and is produced chiefly or solely by a photojournalist.

A producer is an individual who may utilize a variety of journalistic talents to produce news content. The individual typically pulls together news content created by others; the news content could be in audio, video, and/or written formats. A producer strives to provide cohesive news content to listeners, viewers, and/or readers.

A reporter is someone who reports news content. In some cases, the title is used for journalists in general. In some cases, a reporter details what they saw, heard, and/or witnessed. In other cases, a reporter may act more like a stenographer – preparing a report of activities including statements by individuals and documents prepared by others. The news content is usually objective and free of any subjective viewpoints of the reporter.

The next news column in this series will focus on additional types of journalists.

Peirspictiochtai Ar An Saol – Gaelic – Irish – for “Perspectives On Life” is a column focused on aspects of accountability and responsibility as well as ways people look at life.
