21st Annual Lew Huartson Senior Softball Tournament – August 8, 9, & 10, 2025

Silver City, NM – The 21st Annual Lew Huartson Senior Softball Tournament brought an exciting weekend of competition to Scott Park on August 8–10, 2025. Organized and led by Robert Ruiz and the dedicated players of the "70's Boomers" of Grant County, the event welcomed senior softball players ages 50 and over from across the Southwest.

With four competitive divisions (A, B, C, and D) and more than 20 teams participating, the tournament drew athletes from Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico—along with players from other states—competing at the highest level in their respective categories. Despite the hot, grueling conditions, the players gave it their all.
"It's always nice to see the ball players you've known for years," Ruiz shared. "The stories from past tournaments in Silver City, the great competition, and the friendships built here are truly special."

Scott Park was alive with energy all weekend—filled with players, fans, and RVs from visiting teams. Attendees enjoyed food, drinks, and live entertainment, with the Illusion Band performing Saturday night at the park while games were still on so much energy and promoting Silver City and the mining district. One thing the players were asking: "Where do we get the famous NM green chile?" The event also featured raffles for prizes and a 50/50 cash drawing. José Gonzalez from El Paso Old School claimed the 50/50 cash prize, while David Sosa (El Paso Old School) and José Hernandez (Tucson Cowboys) won raffle gifts.

Sunday brought the championship games in all divisions:
• Division A: Azteca's (Arizona) defeated Tejanos (Texas)
• Division B: Renegades (Arizona) defeated Chicano Cubs (Arizona)
• Division C: El Paso Old School defeated Just Us (Arizona)
• Division D; Bad Boys (El Paso, TX) defeated Cactus (Arizona)

Representing Grant County were the Morning Star Governors and the 70's Boomers, both of whom played hard but fell just short of championship titles.

The weekend was a testament to the dedication, athleticism, and sportsmanship of senior athletes who continue to compete at a high level. Congratulations to all participants, and we look forward to seeing you at next year's tournament!
