The Untapped Power of the Voters Voice

For many New Mexicans, the annual Legislative Session can feel distant and disconnected. Local government processes can seem vague and inaccessible, leaving you feeling powerless and unsure of how to engage with decisions that impact your daily life. This doesn't have to be the case. With the next 60-day session starting on January 21st, you have more power than you might think to follow the progress of bills and even influence which ones get passed.

The first step in shaping the Legislative Session is staying informed about the bills being introduced. Bills are introduced in either the House or the Senate, go through committee debates and amendments, and are then voted on before moving to the other chamber for approval. Once both chambers agree, the bill goes to the governor for final approval. You can track bills in real time at www.nmlegis.gov, and many nonprofits and advocacy organizations aligned with your values will be actively involved in supporting or opposing specific bills, keeping their followers updated throughout the session. For instance, NM FAM sends weekly updates to their email subscribers, keeping them informed on key issues and developments.

You also have the opportunity to weigh in with public commentary on bills being considered. If you're concerned about a bill or see one that could positively impact you and your family, you can submit written feedback, visit your legislator's office to speak with them directly, or even testify at committee hearings—either in person or virtually. You'll typically have a couple of minutes to explain how the bill will affect you. Your testimony might be enough to sway the committee's vote and influence the outcome of the bill.

One of the most effective ways to make your voice heard is to directly contact your representative. Legislators need compelling reasons to vote for or against a bill, and personal messages from constituents can have a significant impact. Even if a bill goes against their political allies, your input can help them make an informed decision. Throughout the session, NM FAM will send email subscribers specific calls to action, outlining exactly who to contact and what to say. Remember, your representative is there to represent you—make sure they know how you want to be represented.

Finally, another powerful way to get involved is by sharing information online to help others stay informed. Not everyone follows every bill, but everyone will live with the results of the laws passed. Encourage the people in your life—especially small business owners—to stay engaged and advocate for their interests as well. By amplifying your voice and spreading the word, you can help create a groundswell of community involvement.

It's time to tap into the power you might not have realized you had—and make sure your voice is heard in Santa Fe.
