Crime is not a partisan issue but encouraging 'agitation' is not acceptable from top elected officials.
Albuquerque, New Mexico (March 30, 2025) - Albuquerque is one of the most dangerous cities in the nation, but the attack on the Republican Party of New Mexico's headquarters was not part of the ongoing crime in Albuquerque. That attack early Sunday morning was a violent act of terrorism.
The firebomb used to blow up the entryway of the GOP headquarters was targeted at both the Republican Party of New Mexico as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a federal agency. This was evidenced by the spray-painted "ICE = KKK" left on the wall next to the torched entryway.
Carla Sonntag, President and CEO of Better Together New Mexico, said, "We are thankful that no one was hurt and that the fire did not completely destroy the building. We are, however, sickened by this type of inexcusable violence. Crime is not a partisan issue, but we are increasingly concerned by comments from those on the left encouraging the public to be involved in demonstrations and other forms of civil disobedience that result in violence, property damage, and acts of terrorism."
The day before this crime was committed, New Mexico Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernandez addressed those attending a town hall about resisting President Trump's agenda, saying, "We have a three-pronged project: legislate, litigate, agitate. And you guys are part of the agitate part!"
This type of irresponsible dialogue can excite untoward behavior, even to the point of senseless acts of terrorism like that which occurred on Sunday, 3/30.
Elected officials need to be more responsible for their rhetoric, and those who committed this crime should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law once they are caught.
