SEPTEMBER 9, 2025 - Statement from Amy Barela, Chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico
RPNM absolutely supports families in need of childcare assistance so that parents can work and or go to school. But this latest move by the Governor misses the mark by pushing New Mexico into government dependency at a cost of millions of dollars to the taxpayers. Programs like childcare assistance should serve as a hand up for the neediest of families so it serves as a tool that can empower parents to advance their careers and improve their lives—but the Governor's idea of "universal childcare" would also be a permanent hand out for the wealthy to pay for their in-home nannies.

Thankfully, the Governor's universal childcare is temporary and requires legislation to be passed before becoming permanent law.

Republicans stand for policies that give families real opportunities and create a better life for all. For too long, New Mexico has been at the bottom of national rankings—and while the Governor may be tired of hearing it, our citizens are tired of living it. It's time for something different. It's time to listen to those who want to invest in progress and prosperity, not dependency, especially at a cost to taxpayers.
