December 18 at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – “Anita Scott Coleman,” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Sunday, December 18, 2022, 09:00am - 06:00pm |
Ashley Smith, Registrar and Collections Manager for the Silver City Museum, will give a general overview of the life and work of Anita Scott Coleman, a New Mexico writer who participated in the Harlem Renaissance and was a key figure in the African American community.
“Coleman was a unique voice who did not shy away from discussing the psychological damage of America's racial policies, sexism, gender, and marriage,” Smith said. “Looking at Coleman’s life and work, as part of a community that has flown mostly under the radar, will be enlightening.”
Ashley M. Smith is originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, where she attended the University of Utah, receiving her B.A. in History in 2000. She interned at the Utah State Historical Society’s Preservation Planning Department in 2002, which led her to the Public History Program at Arizona State University. She graduated with a double M.A. in American History, where she focused on the History of women; and Public History, where she focused on Museum and Collections Management. During that time, she was an intern at the Arizona Historical Society.
Smith graduated in 2005 and returned to Utah where she worked at the Utah Museum of Fine Art under their Conservator; and at the Park City Historical Society and Museum as a Curatorial Assistant. She then returned to the Arizona Historical Society, where she became Registrar from 2007 until 2018 at the Phoenix Division. During that time, Smith also worked part-time, helping at a historical property, Sahuaro Ranch Park, in Glendale, Arizona. In 2018 she moved to Silver City and is now the Registrar and Collections Manager for the Silver City Museum.
