The Tempest opens Friday, February 7, 2025 at 7:30pm, with tickets available at the door of the El Sol Theater a half an hour before show time and are $12 for adults and $6 for students. On the night of Thursday, February 13, tickets are by donation.
The Tempest weaves a tale of betrayal, revenge, and redemption set on a mysterious island. Prospero, the exiled Duchess of Milan, has become a powerful magician who conjures up a tempest to shipwreck those who have wronged her in the past. The stranded passengers encounter Ariel a spirit of air and music, and Caliban, a monster with a poetic soul.
The performance will incorporate Virus Theater’s signature style, blending the magic of Shakespeare’s words with engaging physicality and visually striking elements that celebrate both the natural world and the human spirit.
Shakespeare’s magical story will be brought to life by a talented cast made up mostly of teens, showcasing the creative energy and passion of Silver City’s next generation of performers.
According to the director, Teresa Dahl-Bredine, “I love The Tempest’s combination of comedy, fantasy, and realism with a tinge of darkness. It provides a huge canvas for designers and directors, and room to engage the imaginations of our young troupe. In our production we are trying to stress the themes of forgiveness and the beauty an flaws of humanity.” Assisting Dahl-Bredine is the co-executive director of the Virus Theater, Jessa Tumposky,
The play will be performed February 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15 and 16. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday shows begin at 7:30pm, and Sunday shows start at 2pm. On the final Saturday, February 15, there will be both a 2pm and a 7:30pm show.
These performances are supported by the Town of Silver City and Frost McGahey along with many community businesses listed in the play’s program.
The El Sol Theater is at 406 N. Bullard St. in Silver City, NM
