Legislation would ensure utilities are ready to meet state's clean energy goals

Santa Fe, N.M. – Today, the New Mexico House of Representatives passed legislation that would require public utilities to make updates to the state's power distribution systems to prepare for New Mexico's future energy needs, by a vote of 36-23.

House Bill 13 would require New Mexico's electric public utilities to create plans for improving energy generation, infrastructure, and resource distribution to accommodate clean energy and economic development goals. These plans would be provided to the New Mexico Public Regulatory Commission (PRC) for approval.

"As New Mexico's energy needs evolve, our power grid and distribution capabilities have to keep up," said bill sponsor House Majority Whip Day Hochman-Vigil (D-Albuquerque). "House Bill 13 will improve energy reliability for New Mexicans, while facilitating our transition to clean energy and preparing our state utilities for the future."

The updated distribution system plans would allow utilities to proactively plan, engineer, and upgrade their electrical distribution system to improve service to customers, modernize the power grid, and meet air quality standards. HB 13 would also help facilitate the transition from fossil fuels to electricity in the transportation sector by expanding the necessary infrastructure for electric vehicles.

HB 13 now moves to the Senate. The legislation is also sponsored by Rep. Kristina Ortez (D-Taos) and Senator Linda Trujillo (D-Santa Fe).
