Silver City, NM, June 26, 2025—In anticipation of expected increased runoff from the Trout Fire, Forest Service crews and equipment from the Gila and Lincoln National Forests are cleaning out two sediment retention dams in Hill Canyon and one structure on Sapillo Creek. In addition, crews and equipment from Freeport-McMoRan are cleaning sediment from behind a retention dam in Skates Canyon within the Gila National Forest.
Forest Hydrologist Carolyn Koury says, "these proactive steps are designed to trap material and debris that may be generated from fire-damaged soils in these drainages that drain to State Highway 35 and at Lake Roberts." Koury praised the cooperative efforts between not only the Gila and Lincoln National Forests, but the cooperation and work by Freeport-McMoRan, who have donated their equipment and personnel in this effort.
Freeport McMoRan has also contributed time and equipment to help the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish by cleaning out sediment retention structures at Bear Canyon Dam. This effort aids in protecting the lake, fishery and downstream acequias.
