[Editor's Note: This is part 9 of a multi-part series of articles on almost six hours of Grant County Commission meetings on Feb. 11 and 13, 2025.)
By Mary Alice Murphy
This article will continue with the work session review of the Grant County Commission Feb. 13, 2025 regular meeting agenda. It begins with the elected official reports at the regular meeting.
Assessor Misty Trujillo was the first elected official to speak. She congratulated her employee, Erich Pulliam, for ending his probationary position and becoming a permanent county employee as the business personal property appraiser and commercial appraiser.
She reminded people that Feb. 28 was the deadline for those required to report business personal property and livestock renditions. Those reporting after the deadline would face a 5 percent penalty tied to the account.
Trujillo also reminded property owners to ask for exemptions, for which they qualify, including the veterans' exemption, the head of household exemption and the 65-year-old exemption. For the latter one the income must be below $42,900 including everyone in the household for the year 2024, if requesting the exemption this year. Those are due by May 1.
The next county report came from Sheriff Raul Villanueva. He noted that in January, the sheriff's office and other law enforcement agencies in the area went into a new CAD (computer-aided design) reporting system. The new system would allow them to track suspects, vehicles and case-related crimes. "It will auto-populate, which means less time on doing reports and more time in the field. We are still working on learning it and getting the kinks out."
He noted as they were still trying to figure out how to break out self-initiated calls from dispatch calls. Villanueva said calls for January totaled 1,737, which included 42 alarm calls, 41 domestic disturbances, 31 accidents with no injuries, eight accidents with injuries, seven criminal damage to property, 10 unattended deaths, 33 reckless drivers and 26 unwanted subject calls. "We also did 313 traffic stops."
Villanueva said he promotes training for his staff and pointed out several upcoming training events.
He said for the Stonegarden funding, deputies are working 10-hour shifts with the Border Patrol doing fugitive apprehension.
He reported the primary D.A.R.E. donor is moving away from the area and will not be supporting the program any longer. "He was giving us $30,000 a year, so I'm going to be searching for more funding for the program. It is a very positive program that helps our law enforcement interact with our children, and so I am going to ask to see how we can all come together and try to get that keep that program up and running. For the last 15 years, that donor has really benefited our program, without much help from the county and others. I want to try to keep that program."
Villanueva in conclusion thanked his staff. "They've been busy."
District 1 Commissioner and Chair Chris Ponce asked about the unattended deaths. Villanueva explained that they are those people who are found dead, often when they were home alone. "If it's suspicious, we do an investigation, but usually, it's just because they lived alone without help."
District 2 Eloy Medina said the Mimbres residents at his recent quarterly meeting expressed their appreciation for deputies being in the area more often.
"I do appreciate recognition of my deputies in the Mimbres and in Gila and Cliff," Villanueva said.
The next item on the agenda addressed the consent items, including minutes from the Jan. 7 work session, the Jan. 9 regular meeting, and the expenditure report ending Feb. 5, 2025.
Commissioners approved them at the regular meeting.
The next article will continue the work session review of the Feb. 13 regular meeting agenda and the decisions made at the regular meeting.
