According to Tyrone Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Cox, two lightning-caused fires were ignited in the White Signal area on Friday, June 7, 2024. One, of about 100 acres, the Whitetail Fire, was on U.S. Forest Service land, and that agency assumed command responsibility.
The second, the Armijo Fire, of about 20 acres, was on private, and possibly state, land, located about five miles east of Highway 90 off Armijo and Christopher roads. Cox told the Beat the Tyrone VFD was on the fire from about 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and had 19 members and 10 fire apparatus on scene; Pinos Altos VFD had 5 members and 4 fire apparatus, Ft. Bayard VFD had 6 members and 3 fire apparatus, Whiskey Creek VFD had 5 members and 2 fire apparatus, and Grant County Fire Management Officer Roger Groves had 1 member and 1 fire apparatus. The term "fire apparatus" refers to brush trucks and water tenders, Cox said.
No structures were involved, and no injuries were reported.
