Deming, NM – On December 1, 2024, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving the New Mexico State Police.
Investigations Bureau agents learned that at around 8:15 p.m., the Luna County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to 8030 Monte Road SE in Deming for a domestic disturbance call. When deputies arrived on scene, they made contact with John Dwillis (55), standing near a white dodge ram pickup truck. At some point during the interaction with deputies, Dwillis discharged at least one round from a firearm and then barricaded inside the truck. The deputy retreated to his patrol unit for cover and called for assistance.
NMSP officers arrived on scene and attempted negotiations with Dwillis. At some point during negotiations, an NMSP officer fired at least one round from his department issued weapon, striking Dwillis. Dwillis was flown to a hospital in Texas to be treated for his injuries. He is currently in stable condition. No officers were injured during this incident.

Count 1: Aggravated Assault upon a Peace Officer (Deadly Weapon)
The identity of the New Mexico State Police officer will not be released until interviews are completed. The officer has been placed on standard administrative leave.
This case is being investigated by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.
New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney for review.
