Silver City council invited to flag raising

By Lynn Janes

The Silver City Town Council held a regular meeting October 22, 2024. Attendance to the meeting included Mayor Ken Ladner, Mayor Pro Tem Guadalupe Cano, Rudy Bencomo, Nicholas Prince and Stan Snider.

Proclamations

The Silver City town council proclaimed October 22, 2024 "World Polio Day," and Lander read the proclamation. Rotary International spearheads the global eradication initiative along with the World Health Organization and UNICEF to immunize the children of the world against polio. This proclamation renews the promise to future generations. They used contributions of billions of dollars to protect nearly three billion children in 122 countries. A representative from Rotary accepted the proclamation and said last month they had immunized 650,000 children in Gaza and Rotary had been part of that effort.

Council comments.

Snider asked everyone to go out and vote. "It is an important election." He went over the forums that would be done by the Silver City Daily Press and who they would involve.

Prince wanted to thank the police and fire department for their work but had issues with the noise from the sirens and a need to address noise violations. "Given a choice I would rather listen to the sirens than the fears of the public." Prince will be asking town management to review signaling used by the police and fire department. He also wanted to address safety concerns after the recent flooding in Roswell and Dexter. He wished them a speedy resolute recovery after the losses and continued with the various events around the state.

Bencomo didn't have any comments.

Cano wanted to recognize the Silver City Woman's Club. "They do a lot for the community, and many do not realize how much." The club has been active in Silver City since 1901. Cano thought it probably would be the oldest service organization in Silver City. She encouraged any women interested in service to the community to become involved.

Ladner started with how important volunteers have been. He wanted to recognize all of those involved in the voting process and thanked them for their help.

Public input

Kevin Cardoza wanted to introduce himself to the council. He will be the new local government and community manager for PNM. He has taken over Bruce Ashburn's position. The goal he has will be to strengthen the relationship with the city and become a stronger community partner. He encouraged them to reach out to him anytime for resources or help.

Lucy Whitmarsh, regent for Daughters of the American Revolution, local chapter invited the council to attend the flag raising ceremony on October 26, 2024, at La Capilla. The flag had previously flown at the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution headquarters in Washington D.C.

Meeting adjourned.
