Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team TEAM 4 – Andrew Mandell – Incident Commander
Firefighting efforts gain ground as flood warnings are issued for the Trout Fire area
Daily Update for June 23, 2025
Fire Information Phone: 575-323-8964 (8 am – 8 pm)
Acres: 46,796 Start Date: June 12, 2025 Location: 12 miles north of Silver City, NM
Cause: Under investigation Personnel: 1,425 Fuels: Grass, brush, and timber Containment: 22%
Highlights: Residents are encouraged to maintain heightened awareness of changing conditions this week as county emergency managers communicate potential flood risks in and around the fire and surrounding communities. Fire managers also reiterate that the fire remains active. Operations Update: Crews are gaining ground as they reinforce containment lines and extinguish lingering heat. Air and ground resources continue to suppress areas of active fire, especially on the western ridge between Signal Peak and Black Peak communication sites. Aircraft is slowing fire progression with retardant and water drops while ground crews identify suitable topography and construct lines in locations most likely to hold the fire. The fire is backing down steep ridgelines in heavy fuels. Crews continue to mop up and secure along Highways 35 and 15. Along ridgelines, crews are watching for potential burning material rolling downslope, also known as debris rollouts, which can lead to spot fires, especially in steep terrain.
Suppression repair operations are also beginning. This work is taking place in areas identified as contained and include assessing and repairing firelines, mitigating erosion, chipping and removing debris. Water bars and other reconstructive methods have been utilized in some inactive areas of the fire area to mitigate runoff and reduce erosion in anticipation of predicted precipitation.
