Please use caution with fire; leave the fireworks at home
SILVER CITY, NM,July 1, 2024 Did you know that fireworks are illegal on all forest system lands every day, all year long? If you plan to visit the Gila National Forest for the Fourth of July holiday, pack your camping essentials, don't forget the s'mores, and leave the fireworks at home. All Gila Forest Service offices will be closed on July 4, and regular business hours will resume on Friday, July 5.
"Although recent rain and cool temperatures have provided some relief, fire prevention is a year-round practice," said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. "Celebrate responsibly this Independence Day by preventing human-ignited fires and taking your trash with you when you leave."
Here are some reminders for enjoying a safe outdoor holiday:
Fireworks are Prohibited:They are not allowed in the Gila National Forest.
Pack In, Pack Out: Carry out all trash and belongings to keep the forest clean and safe for wildlife.
Campfire Safety: Fully extinguish fires before leaving. Use plenty of water and a shovel to drown and stir the remnants to ensure they are cold.
Dispose of Smoking Materials Properly: Do not discard cigarettes or other smoking remnants on the ground. Use appropriate receptacles and ensure they are fully extinguished.
Follow Best Practices when Target Shooting: Use designated locations and appropriate targets, dispose of ammunition and targets properly, and have fire-safety tools nearby.
Prevent Vehicle Fires: Identify safe parking areas or clear spots free of vegetation to minimize accidental fires.
Check Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM): Know which roads and trails are open to motor vehicle traffic, including ATVs and OHVs. The free Gila MVU maps can be downloaded at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/gila/maps-pubs/?cid=FSEPRD585917
