Don't miss this powerful event in Silver City!
Dora Luz Rodriguez is a legend in the humanitarian community—and her brand new memoir Dora: A Daughter of Unforgiving Terrain is already being called a "must-read." It's an unforgettable story of survival and hope, describing one of the largest mass casualty events in our borderlands. Dora was there. She survived. She witnessed it. And now she's sharing her journey of courage, truth and hope with the world.
Joining her is co-author Abbey Carpenter —co-leader of the Battalion S A R , and another powerful woman leading women in the desert. Abbey is at the frontlines today, finding the remains of mostly women west of El Paso, and ensuring that state authorities are held accountable to recover them with dignity.
Come show up for Dora, Abbey, and this incredible story.
Meet the authors • Book signing & sales • Conversation moderated by Maree McHugh of KURU Gila/Mimbres Community Radio.
Battalion S A R will also have resistance & protest wear available
Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1PM
Avalon Books and Music (405 N Bullard, Silver City, NM)
Dora has inspired generations—including me. She's one of my mentors and one of the main reasons I continue this work. Please come out, hear her story, and help us honor the lives and struggles of those who don't make it out of the desert.
PS: The flyer itself carries deep meaning. The 13 colorful crosses were placed in the desert by Alvaro Enciso and they represent the 13 lives lost in Dora's group in July of 1980 inside Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument—most of them women. On either side of the flyer, you'll see 13 daisies, plus one lavender flower symbolizing the infant carried by one of the women. The site of the crosses is considered very sacred —but is currently vulnerable to removal by the National Park Service.
