TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M., Dec. 2, 2025—The Gila National Forest invites the public to attend a fuelwood cutting workshop on the Black Range Ranger District. The event will take place on Thursday, December 4 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in the conference room at the Black Range District Office (1804 N. Date St. in Truth or Consequences).
With a cold winter looming and up to 50% of area residents relying on fuelwood for winter heating, the Gila National Forest is inviting the public to learn about fuelwood cutting opportunities on the Black Range Ranger District. Topics will include a review of the 2026 fuelwood guide, health and safety concerns, and a new temporary fuelwood area along the NM State Highway 59 safety corridor that will not only provide a supply of easily accessible fuelwood but also improve roadway visibility.
Please contact the Black Range District Office at 575-894-6677 for additional information about the meeting. Visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/gila/permits/firewood-permits for general information about fuelwood permits on the Gila National Forest.
