Wildfire area now open for public entry
QUEMADO, NM, July 18, 2024 – The Gila National Forest is rescinding the area closure that was implemented for the protection of public safety during the Antone Fire back in April.
"I appreciate the public's cooperation with the area closure for the Antone Fire, which helped keep the public out of harm's way and allowed fire crews to focus on their own safety and their firefighting efforts," said Quemado District Ranger Randall Chavez. "While the fire itself is no longer a threat, the public should exercise caution when entering into any recently burned area, because they contain hazards such as falling trees, rolling debris, and stump holes." Fire-weakened trees may appear to be solid, but can be prone to toppling or uprooting, especially during windy conditions. Rocks and logs on slopes are easily dislodged and may roll downhill. Stump holes can be hidden by ash, can be several feet deep, and may hold hot ash and coals for a long period after a fire.
The area closure that was in effect during the Antone Fire will lift Friday, July 19 at 8:00 a.m. The Antone Fire is 100% contained at approximately 12, 400 acres. For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 or
