Christmas tree permits on sale now through year-end

SILVER CITY, NM, Nov 25, 2024 – Gila National Forest offices will be closed Thursday, November 28 in observance of Thanksgiving. Due to limited staffing, the Glenwood and Wilderness Ranger Districts are planning to close early at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and Wilderness Ranger District will not be able to offer map, pass, or permit sales on Friday. Those who have business with the Gila National Forest are encouraged to address it early this week.

"Thanksgiving is for being thankful, reflecting on the accomplishments of the past year, and spending time with family and friends," said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. "May your Thanksgiving holiday bring you abundance – of kinship, good health, and wealth."

In other news, the Gila National Forest began selling Christmas tree permits this week. There are several permit options to choose from: a permit for any species of tree costs $5 per tree; a permit restricted to pinon pine species is free, or fourth grade students who have the "Every Kid Outdoors Pass" can get a free "any species" permit. Permits are limited to one per family; trees must be no more than 10 feet in height, and you must take the entire tree.

Permits are available Monday through Friday from Gila National Forest offices in Silver City, Glenwood, Reserve, Quemado, Mimbres, and Truth or Consequences. Permits may also be purchased online at Recreation.gov. For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
