SILVER CITY, NM, June 14, 2024 Planning a weekend getaway to the Gila National Forest? As summer is in full swing, hot summer days has us all daydreaming of cooler temperatures and water features. The forest anticipates an influx of visitors eager to enjoy the scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. Given the heightened risk of wildfires during the dry season, Gila officials are urging all visitors to prioritize fire prevention and practice responsible recreation to safeguard this treasured forest.
"The forest is in very high fire danger so responsible recreation and diligent fire prevention are essential for preserving the beauty and health of the Gila National Forest," said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. "We appreciate the cooperation of all visitors in helping to keep our forest safe and enjoyable."
To protect the forest and its surrounding communities, visitors are reminded to:
Follow campfire safety: ensure fires are completely extinguished before leaving. Use plenty of water and a shovel to drown and stir the remnants to ensure they are cold.
Properly dispose of smoking materials: do not discard cigarettes or other smoking remnants on the ground. Use appropriate receptacles and ensure they are fully extinguished.
Follow best practices when target shooting: use designated locations, use appropriate targets, dispose of ammunition properly, and be prepared with fire-safety tools such as fire extinguishers, water, and a shovel.
Prevent vehicle fires: hot exhaust systems and catalytic converters can ignite dry grass or shrubs, leading to wildfires. Always identify safe parking areas or clear spots free of vegetation to minimize accidental fires.
Visitors are also encouraged to:
Pack In, Pack Out. Carry out all trash and belongings to keep the forest clean and safe for wildlife.
Respect wildlife. Observe animals from a distance and never feed wildlife. Human food can harm animals and disrupt natural behaviors.
Know Before You Go. Plan and prepare for your visit by checking weather conditions, packing essential gear, and informing someone of your itinerary.
