Closure protects public health and safety during stream restoration activities on Willow Creek
SILVER CITY, NM, June 14, 2024 The Gila National Forest, Reserve Ranger District has temporarily closed the Bead Springs Trailhead, located along Willow Creek in Catron County. Contractors are in the area working on two stream and riparian restoration projects for the next couple of months. The closure will be in effect for the duration of project implementation.
"Two contractors are using heavy equipment and staging materials and supplies in the small trailhead parking area, reducing the amount of available space for public use," said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. "Temporary site closure will allow the contractors to complete their work efficiently, while protecting the public from hazards in the construction zone."
This project is part of a larger, multi-year project to restore Willow Creek and tributaries Little Turkey Creek and Gilita Creek from damage from the 2012 Whitewater Baldy Fire and subsequent flooding. The work projects aim to increase the sinuosity of the streams, slow down the flow of water, increase stream shading, and increase fish habitat diversity. Ultimately, the goal is to restore the stream so that a self-sustaining Gila trout population may one day be returned to the Willow Creek watershed.
