SILVER CITY, NM, Aug. 26, 2024 – All Gila National Forest offices will be closed on Monday, September 2 in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Labor Day stems from the late 1800's, when labor organizers pushed for a holiday in recognition of the many contributions of the American worker to our nation's strength, prosperity, and well-being.
"The Gila National Forest is the ideal place to come out and celebrate one of the last long weekends of summer this Labor Day weekend," said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. "What better place to gather with friends for a day or a weekend of relaxation as we honor the American worker."
While you are out on the forest, please use caution with campfires. They must be attended by a responsible party at all times, and extinguished cold to the touch with your bare hand before leaving it. Where there's heat, there's fire! For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 or
