Silver City -- Motorists who regularly travel Little Walnut Road are asked to have just a bit more patience, as the current phase of this multi-year road improvement project was extended another 500 feet to the north, given that engineers were able to save $500,000 over the course of the project.
"I certainly wasn't going to return that money to the state," said Peter Peña, director of the town's public works department. "I'm glad that we were able to extend the project, and though I know some people are frustrated because we said we'd be done by now, I'll take their complaints, knowing that it's worth having that much more of this project completed."
The new completion date for this phase is June 30, though a few minor tasks will remain, Peña added. Both lanes of traffic are expected to be open by the end of the month. Improvements to this key north-south roadway began just north of Chavez Lane and will end just south of Jack Frost Drive, and includes nearly 3/4 mile of paving, new curb and gutter, ADA-compliant sidewalks on the west side of the street, bike lanes and signage.
The $3.6 million project was funded by Colonias Infrastructure monies as well as funding from the state Department of Transportation. For more information, please contact Peter Peña, director of Silver City's Public Works Department at (575) 388-4640.
