A WILL Lunch and Learn presentation by Frank Merritt

The first pair of Great Horned Owls moved into Frank Merritt's back yard in 2003, and generations of that owl family have lived there ever since. He'll be sharing his story of having them as neighbors on October 16, when he presents Great Horned Owls – in the Backyard – for 22 Years, the latest offering under the Western Institute for Lifelong Learning (WILL) Lunch and Learn series.

For 22 years Merritt's wife, Carlene Roters, and two neighbors have been photographing the owl and keeping journals on their activities. These studies led Merritt to develop a program about the owls, which he presented to the local chapter of the Audubon Society on two occasions. Since then, as a result of continuing use of the arroyo by the owls, the story line sights and sounds that make up his presentation have been expanded.

Merritt is not an ornithologist, but rather a lifelong educator who has taught at all grade levels from first grade on. He retired to Silver City in 1999, unretired to teach Classroom Management for the Western New Mexico (WNMU) School of Education, and retired again in 2006. Subsequently, Frank has been an active member of WILL and has taught several classes as part of the WILL curriculum.

Merritt's PowerPoint experience will be held in the ABC classroom of the WNMU Besse-Forward Global Resources Center from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Attendance is free and open to the public. Lunch is not provided, but participants may bring their own.
