Site closure and water system shutoff due to forecast freezing conditions

MIMBRES, NM, Jan. 7, 2025 – The Gila National Forest, Wilderness Ranger District has closed Mesa Campground for the season. The water system at Upper End Campground has also been shut off for the season due to freezing temperatures resulting in high potential for damage to the water distribution system. Both sites are located at Lake Roberts, 16 miles northwest of Mimbres, New Mexico.

"Due to the weather forecast calling for rapidly declining conditions and freezing temperatures over the next couple of weeks, Mesa Campground has been closed, and the water system has been shut off at Upper End Campground," said Wilderness District Ranger Brian Stultz. "Winter closure of these facilities is a standard operating procedure, given cold, snowy weather conditions coupled with low levels of public use and seasonally low staffing for site maintenance."

Mesa Campground and water service at Upper End are expected to return to operational status in March, or when weather conditions permit.
