July 27, at 10 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "Calming the Nervous System in Turbulent Times"
"No one would argue that we are living in the most trying of times. While staying on top of what's happening worldwide is at our fingertips 24/7, the content of the information we are regularly accessing can quickly send us into states of fear, anger, resentment and even despair," Diane Smith said.
"How do we process the suffering and lack of safety that so many both at home and abroad are experiencing right now? As empaths we often can't help but hold the pain in our own minds and bodies. As a result, our emotions may shift us into various defensive nervous system states that are hard to name… harder still to shake off," she added.
Smith explained that Polyvagal Theory is a scientific model which explains how through evolution our nervous systems were wired to help us survive by scanning our environment for safety. It offers some pearls of wisdom that just may unlock a key to calming our own nervous systems in turbulent times.
Join us to learn more about this pertinent theory that offers unique strategies to add to our self-care/coping skillset as we strive to stay grounded in connection and resilience.
Diane Smith is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 37 years of experience in a variety of mental health settings. For most of her career she was living in Tucson where she worked in public schools, community mental health agencies, military bases, medical clinics and, more recently, a home-based hospice program in Silver City.
She is also a Certified Yoga Instructor and, in retirement, has enjoyed bringing the worlds of yoga, mental health and trauma recovery together. She has led several trauma-informed yoga workshops at the Lotus Center and hopes to offer more in the future.
There are speakers on the patio if you wish to listen to the service outside.
Childcare is available every Sunday. Zoey Cronin will lead a formal children's program on second and fourth Sundays. This Sunday will be a Children's RE program.
Children are welcome to participate on any Sunday, but they will get the most out of the program if they attend second and fourth Sundays somewhat regularly. Family adults may stay for the children's program or attend the adult program. Children are encouraged to bring a small item that represents someone or something they are grateful for that week.
UUFSC Safety Protocol as pursuant to our most recent UUA Guidelines: Masks are now optional, but their use is encouraged. We will continue to serve refreshments on the patio and in the building. Visitors are always welcome.
